CRANBURY, N.J.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Contagion®, the nation’s leading digital and print publication that provides practitioners and specialists working in the infectious disease field with disease-specific information, is reporting continuous coverage of the national outbreak on hepatitis A on its Outbreak Monitor.
The Outbreak Monitor reported 507 cases and three deaths linked with the virus in Kentucky as of July 2. Additionally, 5 inmates were also affected by the virus at the Davidson County Correctional Facilities in Nashville, Tennessee, which launched a vaccination series for all inmates. West Virginia was affected with 404 cases and one death linked to the virus. In May 2018, 68 percent of cases linked to the virus have required hospitalization in West Virginia. Indiana also experienced 171 cases linked to the outbreak.
The hepatitis A virus, which spreads through contaminated food or water, or contact with someone who is infected, is most commonly reported among homeless individuals and injection and noninjecting drug users. To avoid contracting the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that individuals should get vaccinated and wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds after using the restroom and before preparing food.
The Contagion® Outbreak Monitor is an interactive resource that provides real-time updates on disease-specific outbreaks on a local, regional, national and international level. Information included in the monitor are from trusted global reporting organizations, such as the CDC, the World Health Organization, and local and public health departments. The monitor also tracks trends and details on confirmed cases and deaths, matched with recent coverage related to each outbreak.
