Which Zika Strain Was Responsible for the 2016 Outbreak in Singapore?

Annelies Wilder-Smith, MD, PhD, professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Singapore, discusses the strain of Zika that hit Singapore in 2016.

“The Zika strain that caused the outbreak in 2016 in Singapore was actually a Southeast Asian strain, so [it was] a bit different [from] the Brazilian strain, maybe that’s another reason that we didn’t see such a high attack rate. Of the, I think, 16 pregnancies that were infected so far, 2 have already delivered, and both were normal pregnancy outcomes. But we still have to follow-up [on] all the other pregnancies.”
