Ian Frank, MD, explains the "Ending the Epidemic" initiative.
Segment Description: Ian Frank, MD, Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, explains the "Ending the Epidemic" initiative.
Interview Transcript (modified slightly for readability):
Frank: Let me remind people of what the "ending the epidemic" initiative is about. 48 cities, or states, are responsible for the majority of new cases of HIV infection. The goal is to prioritize treatment and prevention services in these areas. In order to eliminate new infections, money's going from the Center for Disease Control to health departments in these areas.
Each of the jurisdictions are coming up with their own plan to try to encourage HIV testing, linkage and retention and care, getting people on antiretroviral therapy and for people at risk getting them to adhere to PrEP or adopt other prevention services.
So the initiative has really just begun. And we need more research in order to understand how to most effectively deliver these services to large proportions of individuals.
