“Pre-exposure prophylaxis is the use of antiretroviral medications to protect people against HIV; it’s shown to be effective if people are adherent. So, the concerns are some people might be prescribed this and not be adherent, and they could become infected, [and] not have adequate drug levels on board but select for drug resistance. Others have concerns just about the idea of giving medication to people who are otherwise healthy, but we think of this as a very important way to prevent HIV.”
