“There are future applications where MCA can be helpful. In one case, it may provide information around the concentration of a drug that would kill a cell. Again, today the microbiology lab really can provide minimum inhibitory concentration, which is concentration of a drug or antibiotic that stops it from growing, but doesn’t actually kill it, per se.
Knowing the concentration that would kill the organism is helpful to pharmacists in order to know what dose is effective, as well as to clinicians to know that they are actually eradicating [an] infection versus just slowing it down and hoping that the body’s immune system will take it from there.”
