Welcome to the Contagion Live News Network. I’m Grant Gallagher and this is the COVID-19 update for Thursday March 26th, 2020.
There are now more than 510,000 total confirmed cases of COVID-19. About 121,000 individuals have recovered, and 23,067 have died.
With more than 80,000 cases, Italy is likely to surpass the number of cases in China today. China has now closed its borders to most visitors, citing risks of reimportation of the virus.
The United States has over 76,500 cases and 1093 deaths. A large amount cases in the US are concentrated in New York, which has about 37,000 cases. New Jersey, California, Washington, and Florida also have high case counts
President Trump told US governors that his administration intends to release new guidelines around social distancing which are based on geographic risk. Counties will be identified as low, medium, or high risk, with corresponding social distancing recommendations.
The FDA has issued an emergency use authorization for ventilators, anesthesia gas machines modified for use as ventilators, as well as positive pressure breathing devices modified for use as ventilators.
